ExTENd — Turning Distributed Research Capabilities into Accessible Infrastructure

Research & Funding Watch #03

Research institutions often already possess highly specialized technologies and expertise.

The problem is that these capabilities are frequently distributed across departments, institutions and technology platforms — and difficult to discover or access efficiently.

ExTENd – Expertise & Technology Exchange Niedersachsen

addresses exactly this issue. The project is building a central platform to connect specialized research technologies, infrastructure and expertise across Lower Saxony. The initial scope includes genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, data analysis, data management and biobanks.

Why it matters

The challenge here is not primarily acquiring more equipment.

It is creating a structure that allows researchers to identify existing capabilities, understand access conditions and connect with the right expertise across institutional boundaries.

That requires more than a searchable catalogue.

A functional research infrastructure needs clear access models, defined responsibilities, transparent interfaces and processes that turn distributed resources into usable services.

CELLIMA perspective

ExTENd highlights an often underestimated aspect of research infrastructure:

Infrastructure only creates value when researchers can actually find, access and use it efficiently.

For shared technology platforms, core facilities and distributed research environments, this means that operational design matters as much as the underlying technology.

Access pathways, service models, workflow interfaces and data handling therefore need to be considered as part of infrastructure design — not as administrative details added later.

About the Research & Funding Watch

The CELLIMA Research & Funding Watch tracks selected research initiatives, infrastructure investments and funding developments relevant to advanced imaging, screening, laboratory automation and technology-driven life-science research.

The objective is not to provide a comprehensive news feed, but to identify developments with potential implications for how scientific capabilities and research environments are being built.
